Many of you knew James as a compassionate young man with a beautiful smile and a loving heart. One of his greatest gifts was empathy, which led to a desire to help others. James was diagnosed with a mental health condition at an early age, but bravely overcame incredible obstacles to achieve love, happiness, and meaning in his life. Today, he would want anyone suffering from mental illness to know that there is always HOPE, there is always HELP, and there is always the possibility for RECOVERY.

On September 5, 2020, James passed away in an automobile accident at the age of 24. He left behind a legacy of inspiration to all those who knew him: family, friends, co-workers –and countless others whose lives were touched by James’ ability to reach out to those in pain or need; whether it was to provide words of comfort and encouragement, or to offer his trust and friendship. Shortly before his death, James expressed a desire to share his personal struggle with mental illness and journey of recovery. Through authentic dialogue with young people, he hoped to increase understanding of an often-misunderstood topic, and by extension, to help grow the movement to end mental health stigma.

As James likes to say, “Believe in the magic around you.” There is nothing more powerful or transformative than a community of family, friends, and supporters working together to move a shared purpose forward. When we come together, we can help to build a better life for all. And the magic happens!

Tonight, we honor James’ courage and his intention to make a difference in the lives of so many.
